Ch 1 - Definitions

1. Quantization of Radiation (Planck's Hypothesis) .

"If a physical system executes a simple harmonic motion in one dimension with frequency v, it take only those energy values E which are given by the relation".

2. Blackbody Radiation .

"Any object which is a good absorber of radiation of a particular wavelength is also a good emitter of radiation of the same wavelength. A body which absorbs radiation of all wavelengths is called a blackbody".

3. Stefan-Boltzman law :

"For a blackbody of temperature T, the heat energy radiated by the body per unit area per second is proportional to the fourth power of its temperature" .

4. The Photon (The Quanta) :

"a packet or bundle of energy moving with the speed of light c" .

5. The Photoelectric Effect :

"The ejection of electrons from a surface by the action of light (or electromagnetic radiation) fig. Page 12" .

6. X-rays :

"The loss in kinetic energy (k1 - k2) of the electron appears as electromagnetic radiation of energy hv, " .
